Ms. Minors Class

Hempstead Elementary School fourth-grade teacher Valarie Minor shows up each day with purpose, passion, and high expectations for her students.

By creating meaningful learning experiences, building strong relationships, and encouraging her students to believe in themselves, she is a big part in helping shape confident learners and future leaders in Hempstead ISD.

“Being Bold in the classroom means always showing up and giving your all every day,” Minor shared. “I set high expectations for every student and create learning experiences that challenge and inspire them. Being bold means moving beyond traditional methods when necessary and taking thoughtful risks to improve student learning.”

A major source of her joy each day comes from watching students grow both academically and personally. Seeing students experience those breakthrough moments when something finally clicks is what makes her work so rewarding.

“My favorite part about working with my students is seeing their growth and the excitement they feel when they realize they can accomplish something they once thought was difficult,” she explained. “I truly enjoy building relationships with my students and appreciate the uniqueness each student brings to my classroom.”

That commitment to growth extends beyond individual students. Through engaging, data-driven instruction, high expectations, and consistent support, Minor works to ensure students achieve measurable academic progress while building their confidence.

During the 2024-2025 school year, 58% of Minor’s 3rd-grade students reached Meets & Above on the STAAR Math test and 69% on the STAAR RLA test.

“I ensure my students understand their growth goals at the beginning of each year, and we work together to achieve those goals. I also support campus initiatives through professional development, collaboration, and maintaining open communication with my families.”

Inside the classroom, students are encouraged to always give their best effort, even when no one is watching. The focus is not only on their academic success, but also on building confidence and personal responsibility.

“The most important thing I want my students to take away from my classroom is to always give their best effort every day, set goals, and believe that they can achieve them.”

Minor challenges her students academically, making sure they feel supported enough to take risks and learn from mistakes.

“When students know their teacher believes in them, they are more willing to stay engaged and push themselves. I celebrate growth, not just correct answers, because effort leads to improvement.”

Looking ahead, Minor hopes to see continued academic growth across the district and ongoing support for teachers.

“When districts invest in high-quality instruction, meaningful professional development, and collaborative learning communities, both teachers and students thrive. I have seen this growth already, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.”
