Although it may be the off-season for Bobcat athletes, Bobcat Stadium was filled with energy and excitement as Hempstead Elementary School fifth-grade students got a firsthand look at what it means to be a future Bobcat athlete during the district’s annual Little Bobcat Day, hosted by the Hempstead ISD Athletic Department.
Designed to introduce students to middle school pre-athletics and athletics, the event gave incoming students an opportunity to meet coaches, learn new skills, and experience the teamwork and energy that come with participating in Bobcat athletics.
Throughout the event, students were divided into groups and rotated through a variety of stations led by district coaches. At each station, students practiced important athletic fundamentals and soft skills, including catching, throwing, running techniques, ball handoffs, and ball handling. Coaches encouraged students to communicate, work together, and build confidence while learning the basics of athletic participation.
The hands-on experience allowed students to become familiar with the expectations of middle school athletics in a fun and encouraging environment while also building excitement for the next step in their school journey.
“Our goal is to help students feel confident and excited about becoming part of Bobcat Athletics before they ever step onto the middle school campus,” Interim Athletic Director Kris Gordon explained. “Little Bobcat Day is about more than sports; it’s about teaching teamwork, discipline, communication, and helping students understand that there’s a place for everyone in our athletic program.”
By the end of the day, students left Bobcat Stadium with new skills and excitement about one day representing the Hempstead Bobcats in middle school and beyond.
