As students transition from class to class, Principal Erika Douglas greets students with a smile. Whether she is reminding students about their ID badge placement or she is recognizing a student for a recent achievement, being a principal is more than a title for Douglas. It is her purpose, earning her the title of 2026 Hempstead ISD Principal of the Year. This year, Douglas had the honor of representing Hempstead ISD Region 4 Principal of the Year celebration held on April 7.
Becoming an educator was always a part of the plan for Douglas. Her journey into education began with the influence of her own teachers.
“My teachers throughout both my elementary and secondary school years had a lasting impact on me,” Douglas explained. “My teachers inspired me. They created supportive and engaging environments that made learning meaningful, and I knew I wanted to provide that same experience for others.”
Her involvement in PALS in high school, where she worked directly with elementary students, was the defining moment. Building relationships, tutoring, and reading aloud to students each week showed her the power of teaching and connection.
“I saw firsthand how encouragement, consistency, and connection could build a child’s confidence and love for learning,” she said.
Douglas has served Hempstead ISD for a total of four years and is nearing the completion of her fifth. Her journey with the district includes time away, but ultimately, a return to what she describes as a “welcomed embrace.” That sense of belonging continues to fuel her commitment to the students at Hempstead Middle School.
“My teachers work hard every day to provide our students with the best education that they can have. Seeing the students work hard and excel is my motivation.”
During her time at Hempstead Middle School, one accomplishment stands out above the rest. Student growth.
“I am most proud of the academic growth of my students during the 2024–2025 school year. Hempstead students are underrated, and we must tell our own story. We have set a goal for ourselves and strive every day to take one step closer to achieving that goal.”
Our story is one of progress, perseverance, and a strong campus culture. Douglas describes the environment at HMS as “positive, supportive, and growth-focused,” where teamwork among staff and accountability among students drive success. High expectations are balanced with meaningful relationships, creating a space where both students and educators can thrive.
“Principal Douglas represents the very best of Hempstead ISD,” Hempstead ISD Superintendent Herbert O’Neil said. “Her passion for students, commitment to her staff, and focus on results have made a lasting impact on her campus and our district as a whole. She leads with heart, purpose, and a clear vision for excellence, and we are proud to have her as part of our Bobcat family.”
At the heart of her leadership is a simple but powerful principle. Presence.
“Being visible and accessible is most important when supporting my teachers and staff. They know that if they email, call, or text, I am there.”
That support is reflected in the dedication she sees daily.
“Every day I see my teachers stand in the middle of 20+ kids and give 110% so that each student will have another opportunity to gain knowledge. They pivot when the need arises. They support even before being asked. My teachers show up for our students, and as a campus principal, it is my duty to show up every day for my staff and students.”
Being named Principal of the Year is an honor she views as a shared accomplishment.
“It is truly an honor and a reflection of the collective work happening on our campus,” she said. “It affirms the importance of building strong relationships, maintaining high expectations, and supporting both student growth and staff development.”
Her leadership, vision, and the positive culture she has built on campus have not gone unnoticed.
“Principal Douglas exemplifies what it means to lead with purpose, vision, and high expectations. Under her leadership, the campus has experienced remarkable academic growth, including an 11-point increase in accountability and the distinction of being the only school in the district to earn a Designation for Academic Achievement in Social Studies,” Hempstead ISD Assistant Superintendent, Brittany Anderson said. “More importantly, she has cultivated a culture where students and staff feel valued, supported, and empowered to excel.”
Douglas credits much of her leadership style to the people who have influenced her along the way. From her mother, who modeled being “firm but fair,” to her husband, who exemplifies selflessness, to the many educational leaders she has worked alongside, each has shaped her approach.
“Throughout my journey, I have ‘stolen’ nuggets of wisdom from a wide array of people,” Douglas said. “Together, these influences have shaped me into a leader who values empathy, service, and a commitment to supporting others.”
Principal Douglas continues to lead with purpose, ensuring that every student is seen, supported, and inspired to succeed.
