In a middle school classroom where growth, encouragement, and high expectations meet, Sandy Smith, 7th-Grade Teacher at Hempstead Middle School, is redefining what it means to Be Bold. For her, boldness isn’t just a part of the job, but it is a daily commitment to pushing students beyond their limits and helping them realize their full potential.
“Being bold in the classroom means challenging students every day to be their best,” Smith explained. “I encourage them to be bold in their goals.”
That mindset shapes every lesson, every interaction, and every opportunity she creates for her students.
Earlier this year, Smith was honored as a B-Bold Award recipient. During the 2024-2025 school year, 68% Smith’s 7th-Grade students achieved their RLA STAAR growth target, and nearly half reached Meets & Above.
What stands out most in her classroom isn’t just academic progress, it’s transformation. Her favorite moments come when students begin to see themselves differently.
“I love when they realize how smart they really are,” she said. “That moment when they start to believe in themselves, that’s everything.”
In her classroom, reading isn’t just a requirement; it’s an experience. She brings texts to life by turning passages into interactive games, incorporating high-interest texts, and even adding a few sweet treats along the way. These thoughtful touches not only make learning fun but also help students build confidence in their abilities.
Her message to students is consistent and empowering.
“I tell my students that the sky is the limit, they can do anything they want, but they have to do their best and work hard each day.”
Looking ahead, her vision extends beyond her own classroom. She hopes to see the entire district continue to grow and thrive.
“I want people to see the greatness our students and schools have to offer.”
Through encouragement, creativity, and an unwavering belief in her students, this middle school teacher embodies what it truly means to Be Bold.
