Joan Davis Superintendent Higher Heights Award Recipient

Hempstead ISD is proud to recognize Joan Davis as the September Superintendent’s Higher Heights Award recipient. With a career spanning more than three decades in education, Davis has dedicated her life to serving students, staff, and the Hempstead community. Her journey is an example of what it means to live out the district’s goal of climbing to higher heights together.

For Davis, Hempstead ISD isn’t just where she works, it’s home. A proud graduate of Hempstead High School, she began her career 36 years ago as a paraprofessional in Life Skills, back when Hempstead and Waller ISD shared a Special Education co-op. After serving as a first-grade paraprofessional, Davis transitioned into the Elementary Library. She went on to serve as the librarian for 25 years, creating a love for reading and learning in countless students.

Six years ago, she joined the Special Education Department as an administrative assistant, where she continues to make a difference as part of the SPED team, entering her 35th year of service in Hempstead ISD.

When asked about her proudest accomplishments, Davis doesn’t point to a single project or milestone, but the lives she’s touched. “It’s especially heartwarming when former students see you and come to say hello, particularly the ones who challenged you,” she explained. “They thank you for not only seeing them but also for seeing what they could be.”

From reading Hank the Cowdog aloud to playing Library Baseball, Davis created moments that stuck with students long after they left her classroom. Many now introduce her to their own children, highlighting the lasting influence she’s had.

Her impact extends far beyond the library or classroom. Davis has been deeply involved in the community, serving as secretary of the Peewee Football Board of Directors for nearly a decade, secretary of the Hempstead ISD Bobcat Band Boosters for eight years, and even lending her voice as the announcer for the Hempstead High School Marching Bobcat Band for five years, including during the unforgettable state football run.

Davis credits her motivation to the students she serves and the colleagues she works alongside.

“My SPED team is a group of wonderful and caring ladies, and it’s a privilege to work with them,” she said.

One of her recent projects shows just how far she’s willing to go to support student success. For the district’s Life Skills classes, Davis created 227 work tasks with 256 activities across all four campuses. Each task is designed with activity cards detailing the instructions, skill level, targeted skills, time allotment, and rubrics for documentation. From sorting and matching to folding towels, using tools, and practicing everyday life skills, these activities help students build independence and confidence.

Receiving the Superintendent’s Higher Heights Award is a milestone that Davis cherishes. “It’s a great honor, and it makes me feel proud knowing my hard work and dedication are appreciated.”

Looking ahead, Davis is committed to continuing her mission to help all students achieve more than they believe possible and supporting her colleagues every step of the way.

Davis embodies the spirit of Higher Heights through her lifelong dedication and her belief in the potential of every student. Hempstead ISD proudly celebrates her as the September Superintendent’s Higher Heights Award recipient.
