Hempstead ISD is proud to announce Pre-K 3 teacher Kelli Johnson as the May recipient of the Superintendent’s Higher Heights Award.
Johnson joined Hempstead ISD in August 2024, stepping into a role that was unlike anything she’d experienced before, but she embraced the challenge wholeheartedly. “When I started at the beginning of the year, it was completely different from what I was used to, but it quickly became a place of growth and learning,” she shared. “Hempstead has helped me professionally and personally, and I’m proud to be part of a community that values every child’s potential and every educator’s contribution.”
In just a short time, Johnson has made a lasting impact on her students and colleagues. She is most proud of the growth she’s witnessed in her young learners, not just academically, but socially and emotionally as well. “Helping my young learners build confidence, develop language, and gain foundational skills has been incredibly rewarding,” she said. Her strong relationships with families and fellow educators have helped create a supportive, engaging classroom that sets students up for success from the very beginning.
Johnson’s work is rooted in intentionality and compassion. “I’ve focused on creating a safe, engaging environment where students feel excited to learn and supported in their development,” she explained. Through tailored instruction and a deep understanding of early childhood needs, she is laying the groundwork for her students’ future achievement.
One moment that encapsulates the spirit of “Higher Heights” came when Johnson supported a student who started the year with separation anxiety and limited language skills. Through patience, communication, and consistency, she helped that student blossom, forming friendships, developing confidence, and progressing academically.
“Helping students overcome early obstacles and reach new milestones is exactly what ‘Higher Heights’ is all about,” she said.
Receiving the Higher Heights Award is meaningful to Johnson. “It’s a powerful affirmation of purpose, progress, and potential,” she said. “It signifies recognition not just for individual achievement, but for the values and impact behind that work, especially in areas of leadership, and community empowerment.”
Looking ahead, Johnson is committed to continuing her work in alignment with Hempstead ISD’s mission and vision. She aims to foster a classroom where every child feels seen, supported, and empowered. She also aspires to expand her leadership and advocacy for early childhood education throughout the district.
Her message to fellow educators is simple. “Remember why you started. Each day, you have the power to shape not just minds, but futures. Even when progress feels slow or the challenges feel heavy, your consistency, care, and belief in your students are planting seeds that will grow far beyond what you can see.”
Congratulations to Ms. Johnson on this well-deserved honor. Thank you for your dedication to lifting students and the entire school community to Higher Heights.
