Hempstead ISD senior Nikki London is no stranger to Austin and the UIL State Track and Field Meet, having qualified twice before in the 400-meter dash. Last year London finished just off the medal podium with a fourth-place finish, but this year, the gifted track and field star wanted more. A medal around her neck.
With her track shoes laced up tight, London put on a performance the cheering Hempstead faithful won't soon forget, crossing the finish line in third place and earning the bronze medal. It was a hard-fought finish in an exceptionally close race, but the big-screen replay left no doubt about London's accomplishment.
“It was an amazing sight to see her parents, and coaches in tears as Nikki stepped onto the medal stand," HISD Superintendent of Schools Herbert O'Neil said. "Nikki is an incredible young lady who has worked so hard under the guidance of her dedicated coaches. They pushed Nikki to be her best, and all of their efforts combined for an unforgettable experience."
London is headed to Texas Southern University to continue her education and track career. Head Coach Kumina Thomas knows London will be hard to replace.
"Nikki has fought through adversity during her high school career, and it was such a great feeling to see her get that medal around her neck," Thomas said. "I've had the chance to coach her in volleyball and track, and she is just a great young lady. What a way to end your senior season!"
Hempstead ISD is proud of Nikki! Go Bobcats!
