Valerie Minor Recognized as Elementary New Teacher of the Month at HISD

As a new teacher of the month at Hempstead ISD, she received a #risktaker t-shirt donated by MaBisha Stubblefield (Bisha’s Bling) and a certificate to display in her room.

“I am honored and overjoyed that my peers chose me for this award,” said Minor. “I love teaching and watching kids grow and enjoy learning new things.”

Minor is a new teacher at Hempstead Elementary who currently teaches 2nd grade. “Ms. Minor always seeks to learn more about her grade level standards to increase student achievement,” said Melissa Skinner, HISD Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction. “She is willing to come to professional development and has a positive attitude.”

“Ms. Valerie Minor has taken to Hempstead Elementary School and her second grade students like a duck to water,” said Kristy Eckermann, K-2 Reading/Math Coach. According to Eckermann, Minor attends every professional development opportunity that fits within her schedule and works steadily to build a relationship with students and peers that fosters a community of learning for all. “She is admired for her work ethic, attention to individual student needs, and her positive attitude,” said Eckermann. “Ms. Minor is truly an asset to HISD!”

Minor earned both her bachelor and master degrees from Lamar University in Arts and Science. Prior to taking a teaching position at Hempstead ISD, Minor taught for four years at Headstart in Navasota and spent five years as an Instructional Aide for Navasota ISD.
