Hempstead High School brought home the state silver medal with “Black Angel” after finishing as Runner-Up State Champions at the State 2A One Act Play contest in Austin on Tuesday, May 21.  Chris Frey received an All Star Cast medal and Silvia Ayala received the Honorable Mention All Star Cast medal for their individual performances.  Frey also placed 3rd at state in Poetry Interpretation competition.
    The HHS One Act Play Company has set Friday, May 24, and Saturday, May 25 as HHS Theatre Days in Waller County for the final performance of “Black Angel.”  The cast and crew would like to invite everyone to join them for a night of theatre and experience their award winning play.
    Show times will be at 7:30 p.m. both nights.  Friday night will have a silent auction and Saturday night will be their annual Dessert Theatre/Silent Auction night.  Admission is $5.00 each night and all proceeds will go toward sending high school students to summer theatre camp.
    “Black Angel” directed by Gloria McLuckie, is a story of a WWII war criminal, Martin Engel, who moves to France to live out his life with his wife.  “We see the relationships along the way, with community and Martin, and discover the essence of humanity,” said McLuckie.  The story, written by Michael Cristofer and produced by Dramatists Play Service, takes place in the woods by a river with various flashback scenes from the 1940’s and 1950’s.
    “I love the script and the story,” said McLuckie.  “It’s not done very often.   I look at it as a “beautifully ugly” story.  It is hard to watch at times, but teaches a great message to the audience.”
